Frequently Asked Questions
-
The purpose of Christian education is to glorify God by shepherding hearts and equipping minds in truth. At SMCS, education is a formative work that shapes how children know God, understand His world, and live faithfully within it. Academic growth and future opportunities matter deeply—but they are rooted in a Christ-centered foundation of wisdom, character, and purpose.
-
SMCS serves as an extension of the home, working closely with parents in the shared work of raising children who love God and His Word. This partnership includes clear communication, shared expectations, and daily opportunities for families to engage with their child’s learning at home.
-
Faith is not an added subject—it is the foundation of all learning. Scripture informs how we teach, how we relate to students, and how we understand every subject. Teachers model joyful faith and guide students to see God’s truth, order, and beauty woven throughout all areas of study.
-
Charlotte Mason’s philosophy aligns naturally with our mission by treating children as whole persons made in God’s image. Living books, narration, nature study, and habit formation cultivate attention, responsibility, and thoughtful engagement—supporting both academic growth and spiritual formation.
-
Habit training is the intentional formation of good habits—such as attention, obedience, diligence, kindness, and truthfulness—through gentle consistency. These habits help children grow in self-discipline and freedom, equipping them to become doers of God’s Word both in and beyond the classroom.
-
Parents are encouraged to review lessons daily with their children, reinforcing habits and discussing ideas introduced at school. This shared engagement builds intimacy with the curriculum and strengthens the partnership between home and school.
-
Students receive strong instruction in reading, writing, math, and reasoning through thoughtful, developmentally appropriate teaching. Beginning in third grade, students participate in nationally normed ERB assessments and consistently perform at or above national averages. SMCS students matriculate evenly to other Independent Schools, Church-related schools, and public/charter/magnet schools.

SMCS is a non-denominational Christian school. While shaped by a Reformed theological perspective, we joyfully partner with Christian families from a wide range of church backgrounds who share our commitment to Christ-centered education.
